Warehouse automation for 3PL operations

Client billing data, packing evidence and parcel sorting. Capture parcel data, support client billing, verify packing and meet outbound cut-offs with right-sized automation for multi-client operations.

What breaks in multi-client warehouses

3PL operations carry problems single-brand warehouses never see: every error lands in a client review meeting, and every billing line needs backup. The common failure points:

Billing disputes without parcel-level evidence

Storage and handling invoiced per parcel or per cubic volume, but with no captured dimensions or weights to back the line items.

Parcel data capture

SLA cut-off pressure

Multiple client cut-offs stacked in the same afternoon, with manual sort as the last step before every carrier pickup.

Sorting assessment

Client claims, no proof

Client claims can be difficult to investigate when packing records are not linked to the order or waybill reference.

Packing records

Heterogeneous workflows

Each client has its own SKUs, packaging rules and systems, but the floor shares one set of equipment and staff.

Onboarding drag

New accounts take weeks to go live because data capture and label workflows are rebuilt from scratch each time.

Re-keyed data

Weights and dimensions typed twice: once at the bench, again into the client portal or TMS.

Scanning & data hand-off

Parcel data to support client billing and reconciliation

DWS (Dimension, Weigh and Scan) captures parcel dimensions, weight and barcode data in one workflow. Captured parcel data can support billing review and reconciliation. Final billing logic depends on the customer contract, rate rules and system integration. For a 3PL, that record also feeds sort and carrier hand-off:

NetRay supplies the capture steps. The invoice itself is raised by your own contract terms, rate rules and billing system.

NetRay solutions for 3PL warehouses

Four building blocks that slot into an existing floor. No greenfield redesign required:

PV80 DWS station with a side-mounted monitor, a parcel on the green conveyor belt and an adjoining roller conveyor.

DWS: Dimension, Weigh, Scan

Parcel-level dimension, weight and barcode records to support client billing review, carrier invoice checks and sort preparation. Static or conveyor-integrated dynamic configurations depending on volume.

Packing Verification & Video

W8 camera + PackEye records packing per order and indexes footage by reference number. Authorized users can retrieve footage by reference, date or time range, which can reduce manual searching and support a more consistent claim-review process.

Start with one client account or one measurable bottleneck

Multi-client floors rarely get a shutdown window. Many customers start with one measurable bottleneck, prove it on one client account, then roll it across the floor. Whether one configuration can serve several clients with different workflows depends on your data flows and label rules; we review that before confirming an approach.

  • Billing disputes → DWS at outbound
  • Packing claims → Packing verification on high-claim accounts
  • Inventory errors → Industrial PDAs with per-client WMS workflows
  • Missed cut-offs → Parcel sorting when manual sort is the constraint

3PL & contract logistics FAQ

When you contact NetRay, it helps to share number of client accounts, daily parcel volume, main billing basis, current WMS/TMS, number of packing stations and your main bottleneck.

How do 3PLs use DWS data for client billing?
DWS captures dimensions, weight and barcode per parcel in one workflow. Those records can support billing review and reconciliation for storage, handling and shipping line items, and help you check carrier invoices against your own measurements. Final billing logic depends on the customer contract, rate rules and system integration.
Can one system serve multiple clients with different workflows?
It may be possible to share the hardware layer across multiple client accounts, while client-specific rules remain in the WMS, OMS or configurable data outputs. Feasibility depends on each client's labels, packaging rules, permissions and data requirements.
What helps most with SLA cut-off pressure?
Usually the last hundred meters: outbound sorting and data capture. If staff hand-sort parcels by carrier while trucks wait, a sorting line changes the shape of the afternoon. If parcels queue at a measuring bench, DWS removes that station as a constraint. We look at where parcels wait longest before recommending either.
How does packing video help resolve client claims?
Recording starts when the operator scans the order or waybill number, and footage is indexed by reference number and time. Authorized users can retrieve footage by reference number, date or time range, which can reduce manual searching and support a more consistent claim-review process. Client claims can be reviewed against transaction-linked footage rather than relying only on operator recollection.
Where should a 3PL start with warehouse automation?
Start with the bottleneck that shows up in client reviews: billing disputes point to DWS, claims point to packing verification, missed cut-offs point to sorting, and inventory errors point to industrial handhelds. Many customers deploy one step, measure it on one account, then expand.
